{"id":6089,"date":"2026-02-08T09:35:28","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T01:35:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yhalaw.com.my\/?p=6089"},"modified":"2026-02-08T10:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T02:18:07","slug":"the-cover-until-99-myth-why-insurance-agents-get-it-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yhalaw.com.my\/zh\/the-cover-until-99-myth-why-insurance-agents-get-it-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"THE \u2018COVER UNTIL 99\u2019 MYTH &#8211; WHY INSURANCE AGENTS GET IT WRONG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past few months, we have seen an increasing number of policyholders shocked by sudden and substantial demands to top up premiums or face policy lapse &#8211; particularly for medical insurance sold as \u201ccovering until age 99\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on recent cases and policy documents reviewed, there are several important realities that consumers should understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. \u201cCover Until 99\u201d is usually NOT what people think it means<\/strong><br>When an insurance agent says a medical policy \u201ccovers until age 99\u201d, this rarely means:<br>\u2022 guaranteed medical coverage until age 99; or<br>\u2022 coverage at the same premium throughout your lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most investment-linked medical policies, \u201c99\u201d merely refers to the maximum age the rider can theoretically remain attached, provided the policy does not lapse. Coverage is conditional on:<br>\u2022 sufficient investment value;<br>\u2022 rising insurance charges being fully paid; and<br>\u2022 repeated premium increases or top-ups over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the investment value is exhausted, the policy lapses &#8211; regardless of what age the policy was \u201csupposed\u201d to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Medical insurance costs rise exponentially after age 65\u201370<\/strong><br>This is the point that is most often downplayed or not explained at all. From policy charge tables and illustrations we have reviewed:<br>\u2022 medical rider charges increase gradually in earlier years;<br>\u2022 but after age 65\u201370, charges rise steeply and exponentially;<br>\u2022 by the 70s, monthly insurance charges can far exceed the original premium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a small adjustment. It is a structural jump. A premium that looked \u201caffordable\u201d at age 50 can become mathematically incapable of sustaining the policy in the 70s &#8211; even if no claims were made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. \u201cJust top up\u201d is not a neutral suggestion<\/strong><br>When insurers later recommend:<br>\u2022 large single premium top-ups; and\/or<br>\u2022 substantial monthly premium increases,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>this is often presented as a way to \u201ckeep the policy sustainable\u201d. What is rarely discussed is whether:<br>\u2022 the remaining contractual term of the medical rider justifies such funding;<br>\u2022 the policy is already near its natural expiry age; or<br>\u2022 the original premium structure was realistically designed for later-life costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. A signed \u201cpolicy acknowledgement\u201d is not proof of real disclosure<\/strong><br>Insurers often rely on policy acknowledgement slips signed many years ago to say:<br>\u201cYou acknowledged receipt of the policy documents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many such acknowledgements:<br>\u2022 do not list what documents were actually provided;<br>\u2022 do not highlight critical terms such as rider expiry age or non-guaranteed charges;<br>\u2022 do not explain sustainability risks in later life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An acknowledgement of receipt is not the same thing as meaningful disclosure or understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. The uncomfortable truth: stop relying blindly on insurance agents<\/strong><br>This needs to be said plainly. Insurance agents are incentivised to sell products. Many genuinely believe what they are selling. But consumers should stop assuming that:<br>\u2022 \u201clifetime medical\u201d means lifetime affordability;<br>\u2022 \u201ccover until 99\u201d means no major premium shocks; or<br>\u2022 an illustration reflects real-world costs at age 70 and above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a product is described as covering you to 99 without a realistic explanation of exponential premium increases after 70, that description is incomplete at best, and misleading at worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Practical takeaway for consumers<\/strong><br>Before trusting any medical insurance product:<br>\u2022 ask what happens to premiums after age 70;<br>\u2022 ask whether coverage is guaranteed or conditional;<br>\u2022 ask how long the rider actually lasts contractually;<br>\u2022 and assume that future premiums will not resemble today\u2019s premiums.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Consumers must stop relying on what insurance agents say and start reading what insurance policies actually provide. \u2018Medical cover until 99\u2019 does not mean guaranteed coverage at an affordable premium.
